Javier Solana
former Secretary General of NATO
By full name Francisco Javier Solana de Madariaga, GCMG, CYC, was the Secretary General of NATO from 1995 to 1999. During his tenure in this role, the first Alliance operations IFOR and SFOR took place, the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council was established and the Alliance expanded to include the first countries of the former Warsaw Pact. Before his work in NATO, he was a member of the Spanish Parliament in the years 1977-1995, worked in ministerial positions, headed the departments of education and defense. He is a member of the Spanish Socialist Party (PSOE).
